Chapter 14

Morgan was truly concerned about his sister's welfare, but the fact that she had been exiled to the Barclays' home also presented him with a plausible excuse to see Dominique again. Then he hated himself for thinking of the pretty blonde at such a difficult time. What kind of a brother was he to dream of other girls when his sister was suffering so terribly?

He cursed his own weakness all the way to the Barclays', then, concentrating on being a loyal brother, he led Cameron up to the front door with a proud swagger, but it was opened even before he had raised his hand to knock. He recognized Beau, although they had never been formally introduced.

"Good afternoon," Morgan greeted him. "We've come to see our sister."

As he stepped out onto the porch, Beau pulled the door closed behind him. "Do you have any idea why she's here?"

Morgan refused to repeat their father's ludicrous tale of an elopement, but was too curious not to refer to marriage. "We heard she's going to marry Christian."

"And you'd like to ask her if it's true," Beau added.

"Well, yes, of course," Cameron exclaimed. "If one of your sisters suddenly took up residence in our house, wouldn't you question why?"

The brothers had their sister's vivid coloring, but thoroughly masculine features. Despite their aggressive attitudes, Beau doubted they knew how to fight as well as Christian and he did, but considering the wretched history between the two families, he hoped he would never have to find out. He smiled and attempted to be more friendly.

"Liana's asleep, and I don't believe we ought to disturb her. You'll always be welcome here, though, so why don't you come back tomorrow, or whenever you wish? You needn't worry about Liana. We're taking very good care of her."

"We'd like to see for ourselves," Morgan insisted.

"I appreciate your loyalty to your sister, but you must have seen what your father did to her." When Morgan and Cameron exchanged a disgusted glance, Beau was certain that they had. "No one has made any wedding plans as yet, so please allow Liana a few days to recover and again look her best. I know she'll be eager to see you. I'll tell her you were here."

Uncertain what he should do, Morgan hesitated to agree. "Is she really all right?" he asked fretfully.

Touched by the young man's concern, Beau attempted to speak the truth without insulting Ian. "Your father has an old grudge against our family, and mistreated your sister as a result. How would you feel if he had beaten and disowned you?"

Morgan's expression hardened and it was plain from the defiant light in his eyes that should Ian ever raise a hand to him, he would hit back. "We aren't the ones in question," he reminded Beau. "We'll go now because we don't want to upset Liana if she's embarrassed about her looks, but we'll visit her again soon."

Beau again relied on a smile to convey his sincerity, "Your father's argument with the Barclays is one-sided," he assured the brothers.
